    On the structure of complete graphs without alternating cycles

    AbstractThe structure of edge-coloured complete graphs Kp which do not contain cycles with adjacent lines differently coloured is completely characterized. This characterization further enables us to prove that evey such Kp (p⩾2) has exactly one connected monochromatic spanning subgraph. Moreover, assume that edges in Kp are coloured by k colours so that no vertex is on more than Δ edges of each colour and less than δ edges of each colour. If such a Kp exists then p⩽Δ+1 and p⩾kδ+1, whereas, any one of these inequalities will ensure the existence of such a Kp

    Part I of this Article briefly introduces the five main legal issues related to Internet use in Taiwan. Part II discusses network-related copyright issues, including the doctrine of fair use, personal and corporate use of the Internet, and one of the first court cases in Taiwan on this issue. Part III discusses issues arising from commercial activity on the Internet, including the validity of on-line contracts, the use of digital signatures for authentication, and the applicability of Taiwan\u27s Broadcasting and Television Law, Cable Television Law, and Fair Trade Law to regulating commercial advertising on the Internet. Part IV discusses the relationship of the Internet and conventional mass communications media such as television and radio. It addresses the question of free speech, libelous or obscene content, and other issues which are familiar in a mass communications context but remain to be addressed as relating to the Internet. Part V deals with the protection of personal data on the Internet, especially in relation to the recently enacted Computer Processed Personal-Data Protection Law, and also touches on the protection of e-mail addresses and domain names. Part VI considers larceny, fraud, and other criminal acts perpetrated via computer networks (old crimes in new guises that have been termed “white collar” crime)

    Singlet-triplet transitions in highly correlated nanowire quantum dots

    We consider a quantum dot embedded in a three-dimensional nanowire with tunable aspect ratio a. A configuration interaction theory is developed to calculate the energy spectra of the finite 1D quantum dot systems charged with two electrons in the presence of magnetic fields B along the wire axis. Fruitful singlet-triplet transition behaviors are revealed and explained in terms of the competing exchange interaction, correlation interaction, and spin Zeeman energy. In the high aspect ratio regime, the singlet-triplet transitions are shown designable by tuning the parameters a and B. The transitions also manifest the highly correlated nature of long nanowire quantum dots.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

And segmented festival market by cluster analysis based on delineated experiential perception factors. The empirical result of this study shows that experiential perception clusters and the visitor type have become the most important factors in influencing the experiential value, the relation quality and the relation outcome

    AbstractThis work examines the overall thermoelastic behavior of solids containing spherical inclusions with surface effects. Elastic response is evaluated as a superposition of separate solutions for isotropic and deviatoric overall loads. Using a variational approach, we construct the Euler–Lagrange equation together with the natural transition (jump) conditions at the interface. The overall bulk modulus is derived in a simple form, based on the construction of neutral composite sphere. The transverse shear modulus estimate is derived using the generalized self-consistent method. Further, we show that there exists an exact connection between effective thermal expansion and bulk modulus. This connection is valid not only for a composite sphere, but also for a matrix-based composite reinforced by many randomly distributed spheres of the same size, and can be viewed as an analog of Levin’s formula for composites with surface effects

    Oscillatory activity in the basal ganglia - is it relevant to movement disorders therapy?

    Chronic high frequency stimulation of the basal ganglia can be a highly effective intervention for movement disorders in patients. In the past decade, therapeutic benefits have been seen with stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus and globus pallidus interna for Parkinson's disease (PD) and dystonia, respectively. These procedures have allowed direct recording of basal ganglia activity and have suggested that abnormal synchronisation of neurons in these nuclei may contribute to motor impairment. This thesis explores the possible correlation between synchronised activity in the basal ganglia, as evidenced by oscillations in local field potentials, and movement disorders. In Chapter 3, we demonstrate the correlation between synchronization at frequencies under 10 Hz in the globus pallidus interna and dystonic EMG. This low frequency activity is shown to be locked to neuronal activity within GPi in patients with dystonia (Chapter 4). Deep brain stimulation is thought to suppress spontaneous pathological activity in the basal ganglia. Equally, however, it must also suppress any residual physiological activity in these nuclei. In Chapter 5, we demonstrate that the basal ganglia are involved in the processing of simple limb movements in the human, by separating the effects of deep brain stimulation on pathological and physiological activities based on baseline task performance. An impairment of motor performance was seen during high frequency stimulation in those patients with the best task performance at baseline. This deleterious effect, however, should be distinguished from the effect of direct stimulation at 20 Hz in Parkinson's disease. Oscillatory activity at around 20 Hz is thought to be a core feature in Parkinson's disease. In Chapter 6, we demonstrate that the excessive synchronization imposed by stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus at 20 Hz slows movement, in those patients with the best task performance at baseline. This supports the notion that synchronization around 20 Hz may be causally linked to bradykinesia. Last, the therapeutic effectiveness of DBS therapy for patients with PD partially relies on the accurate localisation of the motor region of the subthalamic nucleus. In Chapter 7, we propose an alternative method for the localization of this region using the spontaneous pathological 20 Hz activity to be found in this nucleus. The findings of these studies provide evidence that basal ganglia oscillatory activities of differing frequencies contribute to movement disorders

    Repulsion and attraction in high Tc superconductors

    The influence of repulsion and attraction in high-Tc superconductors to the gap functions is studied. A systematic method is proposed to compute the gap functions using the irreducible representations of the point group. It is found that a pure s-wave superconductivity exists only at very low temperatures, and attractive potentials on the near shells significantly expand the gap functions and increase significantly the critical temperature of superconductivity. A strong on-site repulsion drives the A1gA_{1g} gap into a B1gB_{1g} gap. It is expected that superconductivity with the A1gA_{1g} symmetry reaches a high critical temperature due to the cooperation of the on-site and the next-nearest neighbor attractions.Comment: 4 pages, 5figure

    Evaluation of measurement uncertainty for thermometers with calibration equations

    The method recommended by Eurachem did not mention the effect of adequateness of calibration equations on the measurement uncertainty. In this work, the sources of measurement uncertainty for two types of thermometer were evaluated. Three calibration equations were adopted to compare its predictive performance. These sources of combined uncertainty include predicted values of calibration equation, nonlinearity and repeatability, reference source, and resolution source. The uncertainty analysis shows that the predicted uncertainly of calibration equations is the main source for two types of thermometer. No significant difference of the uncertainty was found between the classical method and the inverse method. However, the calculation procedure of the inverse method was simpler and easier than that of the classical method

    Climate change, sea level rise and rice: global market implications

    Climate change will influence yields while sea level rise can inundate producing lands. The research reported investigates the individual and simultaneous effects of these factors on production, trade and consumption of rice the world's number one food crop. A global rice trade model is utilized to do this. The results indicate that the combination of yield and sea level effects causes a significant reduction in production and an increase in rice prices which may have important policy implications for food security. Global rice production is reduced by 1.60% to 2.73% while global rice price increases by 7.14% to 12.77%. Sea level rise is particularly a risk factor in Bangladesh, Japan, Taiwan, Egypt, Myanmar and Vietnam. In the face of such developments, adaptation may well be desirable and thus an investigation is done over adaptation options of increased technical progress or trade liberalization with the results showing that both can mitigate such damages
